Massachusetts CPA Exam Education Requirements

Education Requirement for Licensure: 150 hours (including B.A.)

Participates in International Examination Program: Yes

Hours in accounting: 18 graduate credits or 30 undergraduate credits or a combination thereof, to include financial accounting, audit, taxation and management accounting. In addition, CPA candidates must have 18 graduate credits or 24 undergraduate credits in business.

Exam sitting requirements: B.A degree (120 hours) including 21 credits in accounting to include coverage in financial accounting, audit, managment accounting and taxation and 9 credits in business to include information systems, finance, and business law.

Experience requirements: To qualify for full report license, 1 year of public accounting experience to include 1000 hours in the report function on full disclosure financial statements, of which not more than 300 hours may consist of full disclosure compilations. One year of governmental field audit work may be accepted at the discretion of the Board of Public Accountancy for a full report license. For a non-report license, 1 year of public accounting experience or 3 years of non-public accounting in a position that is substantially equivalent to public accounting. Non-public accounting experience must be beyond entry level and under the supervision of a CPA. Applicants with a graduate degree in accounting, business administration or law qualify for a non-report license.

Ethics exam: No ethics exam

Massachusetts offers pre-evaluation as an optional service. A pre-evaluation will identify any academic deficiencies in your education before you submit a first-time application for the Exam. To begin the pre-evaluation process, please visit CPA Central. You must create a CPA Central user account before you can submit your pre-evaluation application online.

Official transcript(s). Submission by you or school to CPAES.

Certificate of Enrollment, if applicable. Submission by you or school to CPAES.

Photograph Form with a 2×2 photograph taken within the last three months, showing your head and shoulders only.

International Evaluation with foreign transcripts, if applicable. Submission by you or evaluation agency to CPAES.

ADA Accommodation Form, if applicable. Submission by you to CPAES.

Please allow two to four weeks from your file completion date (when application, fees and all additional required materials have been received) for your application to be processed. Acknowledgment of receipt of application will be sent to you via email, unless otherwise indicated. This notice is sent only as acknowledgment of receipt of application.

If you have previously applied and sat, but were currently enrolled in college at the time of application (Certificate of Enrollment form), you are not automatically considered a re-examination candidate.

Massachusetts CPA Exam Fees

All first-time applicants are required to pay both an application fee and an examination fee upon submission of the first-time application. All re-examination candidates are required to pay both a registration fee and an examination fee at the time of registration.

You are able to apply for one or more sections of the examination at a time; however, you are advised to only apply for a section of the examination if you are ready to take it within the next six months.
